World Listening Day is celebrated annually on July 18th, established 15 years ago by the World Listening Project, to promote the importance of listening to the sounds of the world and to encourage acoustic ecology. The date marks the birthday of R. Murray Schafer, one of the founders of the Acoustic Ecology movement & The World Soundscape Project in the 60’s forming the foundation of studies, talks, soundwalks and activities that link us to listening to and connecting with the diverse natural environments we are part of.
The World Listening Project is dedicated to understanding the world and its natural environment, societies, and cultures through the practice of listening. By promoting active listening and acoustic ecology, the World Listening Project aims to raise awareness about the importance of sound in our lives and its role in shaping our understanding of the world.
About Wilderland Project
Wilderland is a public art and community ecology project in Mayo, connecting people to their local environment through creative public engagement, embedded research, and art in the landscape. The project explores our relationship to nature, and aims to raise awareness for biodiversity and Wild Nephin National Park’s ecological restoration plan to conserve Ireland’s only true remaining wilderness as a sanctuary for biodiversity and habitat preservation and to protect our natural heritage for future generations.
It is a partnership project between the National Parks & Wildlife Service, Mayo Arts Service, Mayo County Council Environment, Climate Change and Agriculture Department, North Mayo Heritage Centre, TASC Think-Tank for Action on Social Change, and artists working for sustainability and environmental awareness within the processes of art production.
